Clay Smith

SMITH, Warren Clayton Dec. 15, 1955 March 14, 2018 Warren Clayton Smith met his Lord and Savior face-to-face on March 14, 2018. For 62 years, he lived by humble faith in the God who now fulfills his sight (2 Corinthians 5:7) With great confidence in the promise of heaven, we are certain that Clay was greeted by his beloved son, Hunter, in the Lord's presence. Our assurance of this brings joy in the midst of sadness and transcending peace as together we long for heaven. Clay was born in Dallas on December 15, 1955 to William and Anne Smith. He grew up side by side with his brothers Brook and Dwight and sister Meredith. The Smith siblings attended Bradfield Elementary and Clay was a proud graduate of Highland Park High School. He played baseball for a year at Trinity University in San Antonio before transferring to Southern Methodist University where he graduated with a business degree. Clay met the love of his life, Kathy, in Dallas after college. He proposed at his family's East Texas farm and they were married in April 1982. Before having children of his own, Clay was a natural father figure. He volunteered at the YMCA coaching teams. The best version of Clay was his role as Dad. Kathy and Clay reared three wonderful children, Libby, Hunter and Meredith another generation of Highland Park graduates. He was completely faith and family focused. A charter member of Park Cities Presbyterian Church, missionary to Cuba through East West ministries, and totally dedicated to everything that won the affection of his children. He filled the Smith home with his classic humor, signature pranks and gregarious outlook on life. The Smiths cherished time togetheron any and every sports field and in the mountains of Colorado. Of course, an extension of Clay's family also included their beloved dogs, who faithfully stayed in his shadow. Everyone who knew Clay loved him. He was loved and respected professionally in his career as the Retail Brokerage Lead at Jones Lang LaSalle. Among many awards, he was honored with two prestigious awards: the Chairman's Award from the Staubach Company in 2003 and the JLL Retail President's Award in 2017. Clay loved his career and was honored to work hand in hand with two of the industry leaders, Hank Dickerson and Roger Staubach. His larger-than-life personality has left a lasting impression on all who were privileged to work by his side. Much like his son Hunter, Clay was drawn to the goodness of God's creation at Cornerstone Ranch. He was a city slicker turned true country boy at heart and could often be found riding his tractor with his grandsons. The ranch was Clay and Kathy's haven because it was always centered on familyClay's greatest love. For the past two years, Clay was living his best life because of the inspiration of his son, Hunter. He often said that Hunter's legacy made him a better husband, man and father. If not in West Texas on the weekends, Clay could be found on the golf course at Dallas Country Club. His love for the game was simple and true but he was also a great shotboasting a Club Championship in 2003 and two Senior Club Championships in 2012 and 2017. Clay is survived by his beloved wife, Kathy, his oldest daughter and son-in-law, Libby and Ben, his younger daughter Meredith, two adoring grandsons, Oliver and Mac, and a precious granddaughter, Adeline. He is also survived by his mother, Anne Smith, and siblings Brook Smith and his wife Laura and Meredith Smith Folger and her husband Greg. No doubt, Clay was greeted in heaven by his best friend and son, Hunter, his father, William Smith, and his brother, Dwight Smith. A celebration of Clay's life will be held on Tuesday, March 20th at 2:00 p.m. at Park Cities Presbyterian Church. The Smith family requests that any donations be made in Clay's honor to the PCPC Foundation. Together we cling to the words that Clay modestly taught and lived. By God's grace, may we seek justice, may we love kindness, and may we walk humbly with our God all the days of our lives (Micah 6:8). With his example and high hope of heaven, we rejoice and sing with Clay: "He will hold me fast, He will hold me fast; for my Savior loves me so, He will hold me fast."
